30, 2010 - Chicago, IL TRIATHLETE LAURA BENNETT WINS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP - NAMED USA TODAY ATHLETE OF THE WEEK |
It's been quite a week
for triathlete Laura Bennett (Boulder, CO). Despite
the already steamy conditions in Tuscaloosa, Alabama
on Saturday the 35-year-old Bennett turned up the
heat on the competition and finished nearly three
minutes ahead of her closest competitor to capture
the National Champion title."I've had a fantastic season, and this is exactly where I wanted to be at this time of the year," said Bennett. "In Beijing (at the 2008 Olympics) I finished fourth, so while I'm proud of that, it's been a huge motivator for me to take home a medal next time. The plan since then has been to win in London (at the 2012 Olympic Games). I know I'm capable of winning gold there and Greg (husband and world class triathlete Greg Bennett) and I have a long term, big picture plan to get me on that Olympic podium. This season the goal was to establish myself as the top American woman on the international circuit and to gain a deeper understanding of how to adjust my training levels so I'll be ready to perform at my best when it counts most. I feel good that we accomplished both and to win here at US Nationals is the icing on the cake of a very solid year."
